Michelin-worthy sushi on the Central Coast

There are a lot of restaurants along the Central Coast of California, but not many of them that have a Michelin star. I had read some hype around Sushi by Scratch in Montecito, which won its first star in 2021. My kiddo forbade me to go, unless he could join too. So for a Spring Break adventure treat, we made the 4-hour drive up the coast to try this 17-course omakase sushi meal.
First, I was a little scared that we weren't going to be able to eat 17 pieces of sushi, but after the first piece, I wasn't actually sure they were going to serve us enough because it was that. damn. good.
Now, I don't think this would be considered traditional sushi. It was more like the Chef's spin on what delicious sushi should be. I can confirm that it was well crafted, perfectly formed pieces of nigiri with exquisite sauces, accoutrements and preparations to enhance whatever fish it was accompanying: hamachi, toro, salmon, uni, A5 wagyu (which brought my kid to literal tears of happiness), and so many more.
Now, I am not the best picture-taker in restaurants; I just really don't like to take pictures of my food (just let a girl eat!). And this restaurant was very dimly-lit, so needless to say I didn't capture a lot of the evening. Mainly because I was so caught up in every bite and wiggling with joy with every chew. But, I did manage to capture my favorite bite of the evening which was a piece of seared bone marrow with a little bit of fresh wasabi. This was an incredible, decadent, melt in your mouth and let your eyes roll back in your head kind of bite. You know what I'm sayin'?

Then for the next piece, which was unagi, they dripped the remaining bits of bone marrow over the top of it, and I don't think I'll ever be able to eat unagi any other way again. It was absolutely epic.
Basically, the moral of the story is let's put bone marrow on everything and I will be incredibly happy. Sushi by Scratch was definitely delicious and worth the drive and splurge for such a cool omakase experience.
